29 People Killed As El Chapo’s Son Arrested In Mexico
The illegal drugs industry in Mexico was dealt a major blow as officials captured and arrested Ovidio Guzman-Lopez, the alleged leader of his father’s former cartel.
There is a worsening drugs crisis in the country at present, with more people in a drug rehab centre than ever before and an increased number of overdoses and deaths throughout the country, particularly among young people.
The arrest, which took place in January, marks a major breakthrough, and is a big step forward in taking as many drugs off the street as possible.
Arrested in Culiacan, in the north west of the country, at least 29 people were killed in the operation, including 10 soldiers and 19 suspects in what led to a large reaction from members of the cartel. Gang members set up a number of road blocks, set fire to vehicles and attacked planes at a local area in reaction to the arrest, injuring 35 members of the Meican military and leading to the arrest of 21 gunmen.
Guzman-Lopez, who is the son of Joaquin Guzmen, known as El Chapo, was flown to Mexico City and taken to a maximum security prison, accused of leading the Sinaloa cartel, one of the world’s largest drug-trafficking organisations on the planet.
The arrest came as part of a six month operation, with Mexican officials also having the support of United States officials, with the cartel’s operations reaching far and wide.
His father, El Chapo, is currently serving life imprisonment in the USA after being found guilty of money laundering and drug trafficking back in 2019.
The government in the USA believe that both Ovidio and his brother, Joaquin, are responsible for overseeing 11 methamphetamine labs in Sinaloa, producing a serious amount of the substance that is adding a lot of fuel to the ongoing drug problem in both Mexico and the States, with the latter also wanted, with a large reward available for information by the government.
The pair are also believed to have ordered the murder of informants, a drug trafficker and a Mexican singer, who refused to sing at his wedding.

Trial and sentencing has yet to begin, but it’s expected to be one of the largest scale trials for some time and could be instrumental in bringing down the cartel over the coming years and helping put a large dent in the ongoing drugs problem not just in Latin America, but worldwide.
